Portsmouth are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thiago Motta but could face competition from Everton.

The highly-rated Brazilian, 25, only joined Atletico last summer but does not figure in the plans of manager Javier Aguirre and is eager to try his luck in England.

He almost joined Newcastle last year but there are concerns over his fitness after a series of knee injuries, which have resulted in him having reconstructive surgery in Colorado with Dr Richard Steadman.

However, his style would suit England and Harry Redknapp and David Moyes are determined to land players this week.

They both have limited budgets and would be prepared to take a chance on him should he prove he is fit enough for the Barclays Premier League.

Both clubs have also been offered former Arsenal midfielder Edu but opted against a deal due to concerns over his fitness.
