A billionaire friend of Roman Abramovich was today linked with a possible takeover bid for Blackburn Rovers.

Russian banker Alexander Mamut, 43, failed in a recent attempt to buy Torpedo Moscow and is now believed to have turned his attention to the Premiership.

The tycoon, who made his fortune on the Soviet debt market, is said to be looking at a number of clubs with the 1995 Premiership champions emerging as favourite.

Although Blackburn are run by a board of directors, the financial power still lies with a trust fund left to the club by the late Jack Walker.

Blackburn chief executive John Williams said: "There has been no contact so there has not been any consideration of what might follow if something of this nature does occur."
