Poet Laureate Andrew Motion today launched a quest to find England's finest football chant. Here are some examples of popular club chants.

  • Chant about Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg, sung to the tune of I Love You Baby: "We love you Freddie Coz you've got red hair, We love you Freddie Coz you're everywhere, We love you Freddie..."

  • Aston Villa, sung to the tune of "Glory Glory Halleluiah: "My eyes have seen the glory of the Villa with the cup, Seven times we've won it no-one else can catch us up, We are the boys in claret and blue we are the chosen few, As the Villa go marching on, Glory glory Aston Villa, Glory glory Aston Villa..."

  • Everton's Wayne Rooney, to the tune of Just 17 - Beatles: "He was just 17, You know what I mean, And he wears the golden boots upon his feet. No we wouldn't have Michael Owen ooooohhh coz we've got Wayne Rooney."

  • Bolton Wanderers' Burnden Aces: "Oh me lads, you should have seen 'em running, Ask 'em why and they reply the Bolton boys are coming, All the lads and lasses with smiles upon their faces, Walking down the Manny Road, To see the Burnden aces."

  • Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, to the tune of Let It Be: "When we find ourselves in times of trouble, Stevie G runs past me, Playing the game with wisdom, Stevie G, And in my home, the Spion Kop, We watch him jog, right in front of me, Spreading balls with wisdom, Stevie G, Let it be, let it be, let it be, Stevie G, The local lad turned hero, Stevie G..."

  • Wolverhampton's Hi Ho Wolverhampton, to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining: "You're everywhere and nowhere baby, That's where you're at, Running down a bumpy hillside, in your hippy hat, Flying across the country, and getting fat, Saying everything is groovy, when your tyres are flat, And it's - hi ho Wolverhampton, no matter where you go now baby I see your sun is shining, But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious."

  • Southampton's Anders Svensson, to the theme tune of The Flintstones: "Anders, Anders Svensson, He's Southampton's Swedish football star, From the team of Elfsborg, He's as solid as a Volvo car."

Fans composing original, funny and passionate songs could be crowned the first Barclaycard Chant Laureate in the new competition.

The winner of the competition will receive a £10,000 bursary for watching top football matches in 2004/5.

The panel judges are: Andrew Motion (Chairman), BBC Radio DJs Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave, Barclaycard's Nic Gault, poet Ian McMillan, football commentator Stuart Hall.
