Crowd trouble not linked with injured steward

The Southampton steward who broke his leg during last night's game against local rivals Portsmouth was not caught up in crowd trouble.

Police at first thought that he fell down a flight of stairs during what was described as a "crowd surge". But a club spokesman said today: "It was completely isolated, nothing to do with any crowd. He slipped off a step and broke his leg."

The incident was not linked to an outbreak of fighting in the ground after James Beattie converted an injury-time penalty - his second goal of the night - to seal Saints' 2-0 win at St Mary's.

Pompey fans, who had been told they would be locked in the ground for 10 minutes after the final whistle, surged towards a set of stairs leading to an exit and punches were seen to be thrown.

Police ejected five supporters as well as making 16 arrests in connection with the game.

Portsmouth fans angered the home crowd by failing to respect a pre-match minute's silence for the late Southampton president Ted Bates, who died last week.
