Surrey chief Paul Sheldon has flown to Australia to interview Steve Rixon for the job of cricket manager at The Oval but his appointment is not yet a done deal.

Rixon, the 49-year-old former Test wicketkeeper who coached New Zealand during the mid-90s and is now back with New South Wales, has spoken about coming to England.

Rixon is not the only candidate in Surrey's sights as they seek a replacement for Keith Medlycott. Alan Butcher, the county's second team coach, was interviewed last week.

Wayne Clark, the Australian who was in charge at Yorkshire, former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus and ex-Warwickshire batsman Andy Moles are among names to have attracted real interest.
