He said: "I think he is the best full back in England and if he performs well next month he will be going to France as the No 1 full back. He was almost faultless in the European Cup Final against Leicester."

Jonny Wilkinson, who was 20 in his first World Cup in 1999, said. "He has more confidence than I had at his age and he has really flourished in the England environment."

England head coach Brian Ashton's reluctance to pick specialist wings at full back leaves him with Cipriani, Olly Morgan and Nick Abendanon.

Cipriani said: "It has been my ambition to get to this World Cup and I have always been willing to put everything on the line to get there."
