Martin O'Neill has not given up on bringing Sampdoria right back Christian Maggio to Aston Villa despite competition from AC Milan.

Villa are thought to have lodged an £8million bid but Milan are ready to pay £10m. Napoli are also reported to be interested in the 26-year-old, who scored nine goals from defence in Serie A last season.

He is under contract at Sampdoria until 2011 and his agent says he may well stay with the club after their sixth-place finish and qualification for next season's UEFA Cup.
