Aussie trainers hit out at drug bias over Royal Ascot runners

The BHA have denied random drug testing of Royal Ascot's international runners was due to concerns over the abuse of steroids.

Australian trainers have angrily refuted that they are subject to less scrutiny than their British counterparts.

But the row threatens to overshadow the strong overseas challenge for the meeting, led by sprinters Magnus and Takeover Target. Peter Moody, trainer of Magnus, said he thought it was no coincidence that testers had swooped on Monday.

But BHA director of equine science and welfare, Dr Tim Morris, said: 'Last year we tested those horses entered for Royal Ascot who had come from overseas jurisdictions which do not have the same regulations in terms of prohibited substances.

'What we have done this year is no different.'
