Authorized's legacy: Derby success helps Chapple-Hyam build for the future

Now in his fifth season at the historic St Gatien stables in Newmarket, following his abortive stay in Hong Kong, Chapple-Hyam, who also won the 1992 Derby with Dr Devious, has spent some of his hard-earned cash buying the next door stables, Machell Place, which was owned by former trainer Tony Hide.
Nose for a winner: Chapple-Hyam inspects his talented French Derby candidate Declaration of War
Chapple-Hyam hopes to buy St Gatien, which he currently rents, in the near future. His new acquisition gives him 90 boxes.
There is an air of optimism as he contemplates running Winker Watson, the unbeaten Norfolk and July Stakes winner, in the Stan James 2,000 Guineas and Cape Amber in the 1,000 Guineas.
He has Declaration of War, who was beaten two and a half lengths by Rio de la Plata in the Prix Jean- Luc Lagardere at Longchamp, pencilled in for the French Derby at Chantilly.
Chapple-Hyam said: 'Winker is in great form. I am always changing my mind so he could go to the Craven Stakes but at this stage he'll have a few racecourse gallops at Newmarket and go straight to the Guineas.
'We stopped last year because I wasn't happy with his action. We X-rayed his knees and there was a shadow on one of them which meant that something might happen. He is fine now.
'On breeding, he is not certain to stay a mile but he has a very laid-back attitude and I think he will. I don't like the Greenham Stakes (as a trial)because it is often a sprint and he'd get a penalty. So it is the Craven or straight to the Guineas.
'Cape Amber is probably my best three-year-old and likely to go straight for the 1,000 Guineas. She is by Cape Cross out of a Rainbow Quest mare and I would love to think she could be an Oaks filly but I am not sure she will get the mile and a half trip.
'Tariq goes straight for the Lockinge and then the Queen Anne. Ramonti might turn up in the Queen Anne and he'd be a hard horse to beat.'
Chapple-Hyam also has high hopes for Al Qasi, who won at The Curragh last August. The five-year- old, a better horse this year, will seek to win seven furlong Listed and Group races in Europe More immediately, Chapple- Hyam hopes to run Don't Panic in the William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday.
The 14-1 shot needs 10 to defect from the race otherwise he could run in the consolation Spring Mile.
Chapple-Hyam is delighted to have his old pal Alan Munro back to ride the majority of his horses.
He would probably have ridden Authorized but for being ill and sidelined for 18 months.
The trainer has 50 juveniles, one of the best looking is Skid Solo, who is being aimed at the April maiden won by Winker Watson at Newbury last year. He is owned by the same Betfair syndicate.
As revealed in Racemail on Monday, Chapple-Hyam is receiving Medicine Path plus two juveniles, all of them owned by John Fretwell who has parted company with trainer Eoghan O'Neill.
Meanwhile, Martin Dwyer is on standby to ride Willie Haggastrained Heaven Knows in the Lincoln.
Richard Hills, owner Sheik Hamdan's No 1 jockey, is due to ride the gelding but will switch to favourite Zaahid if that one makes the cut for the race today. The colt needs five to come out to make the line-up.
Haggas also runs Very Wise (Jimmy Fortune), last year's winner. He said: 'Very Wise is not well handicapped.
'Heaven Knows is a different horse since we gelded him this winter. He is much sharper and he would be my selection.'
