Back off - Lampard will answer boos with wonder goal, promises Gerrard

Steven Gerrard last night predicted that Frank Lampard will silence his noisy critics in the England crowd with the kind of spectacular goal for which they once cheered him to the rafters.

The Chelsea midfielder was jeered before last Friday's 1-1 draw with Brazil but England team- mate Gerrard believes he is ready to respond in the only way he knows how, against Estonia in Tallinn tomorrow night.

"I know how Frank will react," said Gerrard. "He will beat them. He'll score a wonder goal in the next few games or put in a wonderful performance.

"Frank is a world-class player and a nightmare to play against. He scores every week, which is why I find all this so surprising. We are so lucky to have Frank Lampard in an England shirt."

Gerrard was talking on the day he became the highest-paid player in Liverpool history after finally signing a four-year deal worth £120,000 a week. Jamie Carragher also signed on at Anfield for another four years, on around £80,000 a week.

England coach Steve McClaren could spring a surprise by sending on Kieron Dyer as an impact sub at full-back.

McClaren kept his players guessing during yesterday's training session in Manchester by starting with the team he selected for Friday's friendly with the Brazilians at Wembley.

Members of the squad remain convinced that changes will be made, but at Carrington there was no place for Peter Crouch in attack and no place for Wayne Bridge.

Dyer, who made his first international appearance at right-back in an 8-0 win against Luxembourg in 1999, has been intermittently deployed in defence in training over the past week and McClaren may turn to the Newcastle winger as an emergency option.
