Ban row hots up as top riders penalised

Three top jockeys received bans for whip offences at Newbury yesterday on the day riders set up a summit with racing's rulers over the growing number of their profession being punished.

Champion jockey Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes, who were both already facing suspensions, picked up one-day bans, while Jimmy Fortune received two days.

Derby-winning jockey Martin Dwyer, who is not among the 30 of 110 fully licensed Flat riders currently banned or facing time on the sidelines, said: "We are having a meeting with Malcolm Wallace (the HRA's racing director).

"It seems the days of cautions have gone. We don't seem to get the benefit of the doubt anymore."

Earlier in the day Aussie jockey Hugh Bowman had his first taste of HRA justice when his appeal against a one-day ban for entering the wrong starting stall at Haydock on June 7 was rejected and his £500 deposit forfeited.

The decision was symptomatic of what riders perceive as a toughening up of the rules this season, a feeling that had led to them calling for a meeting.

HRA spokesman Paul Struthers said: "We are aware of jockeys' concerns and we are assembling statistics to see if there is a real increase.

"Rules are in place for jockeys' safety and fairness to owners and punters."

The bans for Moore and Hughes were a sting in the tail on a day when they landed a treble and double respectively at Newbury.
