Banahan handed new Bath deal

Giant Bath winger Matt Banahan has been rewarded for an outstanding breakthrough season with a new two-year contract.

Banahan, 21, is second only to Lesley Vainikolo in the Guinness Premiership try-scoring charts and is tipped as an England international of the not too distant future.

The Channel Islander, who stands 6ft 7in and weighs 17st 4lbs, started out as a lock forward with London Irish before switching to the wing on the advice of England coach Brian Ashton.

Big step: Banahan is staying at Bath

"The main reason I wanted to stay was because I really wanted to be part of an up-and-coming club," said Banahan, who has been a regular in the England Sevens squad this season.

"I want to be part of a team that is going to fulfil it's potential and I believe Bath is that club.

"I really want to help Bath lift some silverware. We have the potential to do really well and when you look at what is best for yourself, you can see that Bath is an exciting place to be at the moment."

Scrum-half Mike Baxter, who rejoined Bath from Pertemps Bees at the start of this season, has also signed a new two-year contract.
