Banahan hat-trick hint for England

England hopeful Matt Banahan grabbed a stunning hat-trick in front of national head coach Brian Ashton at The Rec to send Bath top of the Guinness Premiership table for the first time since April 2004 with a comprehensive victory over struggling Leeds Carnegie.

Head coach Steve Meehan, looking ahead to upcoming games against Wasps and Gloucester, said: "We scored five tries today to put some pressure on Gloucester and now we have to make sure we don't throw away the hard work we've done in our first eight games at Wasps next weekend.

Olly Barkley, who must also have caught Ashton's eye with a creative man-of-the-match display and a hand in four of Bath's tries, added the touch-line conversion and then kicked two penalties to have Bath 13-0 up before Alberto Di Bernardo clipped over a penalty to get Leeds on the board in the 36th minute.

Three minute into the second half, Barkley was twice involved in a move off turn-over ball which ended with Banahan again applying the finishing touch and Barkley clipping over the conversion.

Scrum-half Michael Claassens was put through a gaping hole by Butch James to score under the posts with Barkley again converting as Bath opened up a 27-3 lead.
