Banahan hat-trick hint for England
22 December 2007
Head coach Steve Meehan, looking ahead to upcoming games against Wasps and Gloucester, said: "We scored five tries today to put some pressure on Gloucester and now we have to make sure we don't throw away the hard work we've done in our first eight games at Wasps next weekend.
Matt Banahan is tackled by Rob Vickerman of Leeds
"Leeds worked very hard and made sure we had to up our work-rate after the break to come out on top."
Bath led 13-3 at half-time, courtesy of a blistering start when England Sevens wing Banahan crashed over for try in the corner inside the first minute.
Olly Barkley, who must also have caught Ashton's eye with a creative man-of-the-match display and a hand in four of Bath's tries, added the touch-line conversion and then kicked two penalties to have Bath 13-0 up before Alberto Di Bernardo clipped over a penalty to get Leeds on the board in the 36th minute.
Three minute into the second half, Barkley was twice involved in a move off turn-over ball which ended with Banahan again applying the finishing touch and Barkley clipping over the conversion.
Scrum-half Michael Claassens was put through a gaping hole by Butch James to score under the posts with Barkley again converting as Bath opened up a 27-3 lead.
Powerhouse Banahan completed a stunning hat-trick two minutes later a earn the vital bonus point.
Tom Biggs grabbed a consolation touchdown for Leeds with seven minutes to go.
