Barca link to Jose leaves Lampard future in doubt

The future of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba at Chelsea has been thrown into further doubt on the day of the Carling Cup final after Barcelona moved a step closer to appointing Jose Mourinho as manager for next season.

Lampard and Drogba, who will face Tottenham at Wembley today, are close to the former Chelsea manager, now the overwhelming favourite of Barcelona's board to take over at the Catalan club.

Mourinho, who worked at the club as an assistant to Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal in the Nineties, has let Barcelona know that he is interested and is even preparing backroom staff, with former Barcelona player Luis Enrique lined up as his No2.

If the deal is sanctioned — and it will be dependent on current coach Frank Rijkaard's performance in the Champions League and the league in the next six weeks — Lampard is almost certain to join Barcelona.

Drogba's future is less clear, given that Barcelona already have Samuel Eto'o to play in his position. But AC Milan have made it clear that the striker would be a transfer target in the summer.
