Barca set sights on Mascherano

Stand by for the Tevez Affair Mk II. Barcelona are planning to test Liverpool's desire to hang on to Argentine star Javier Mascherano at the end of the season.

Like his fellow countryman Carlos Tevez, Mascherano's transfer rights are owned by Kia Joorabchian's company and Liverpool must pay MSI £20 million if they wish to make Mascherano their own.

Next move: Mascherano could be heading to Barca

With FIFA planning new rules on third-party ownership, Liverpool have stalled in talks, presumably hoping that they will drive a better deal if there are more stringent rules on the practice that was highlighted by Tevez's protracted move from West Ham to Old Trafford.

Barcelona would expect to get Mascherano for less than £20m, but they could yet outbid Liverpool.

OLE GUNNAR Solskjaer could teach most people a thing or two about football but next month the former Manchester United striker will go back to school himself.

Solskjaer will join 24 eager students on a Norwegian FA coaching course at Raufoss, north of Oslo. The FA's head of education Reidar Schjei welcomed Ole as 'the world's most famous Norwegian'.

CLAUDE MAKELELE used to be indecisive, but now he is not so sure.

Chelsea's France midfielder retired from international football after Euro 2004, only to be coaxed back by Zinedine Zidane. He called time again after the 2006 World Cup Final and was annoyed when Raymond Domenech continued to pick him. Then Makelele said he'd play in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, but not the finals.

And now? "It's true that I said I wouldn't play at the Euro 2008 finals, but I've changed my mind," he said. "I've never won a trophy with France, but just being part of things is an enormous thing. International football has given me some great times, so why give up now?"

PATRICE EVRA has finally accepted his new role in life.

With Ronaldo, Nani, Giggs and Rooney providing the width and flair at Manchester United, the France defender has to take pleasure in, well, defending, instead of rampaging down the wing as he did at Monaco.

"Now when I barge someone with the shoulder or when I make a clean tackle, I am happy in my mind," he said. "In the past, I used to enjoy a good dribble me, so that's new for me."
