Barnsley looking up again

Jon Macken instantly paid off a slice of his £150,000 transfer fee with the goal that halted Barnsley's alarming slide down the Championship.

Macken has escaped Derby's mission impossible to sign an 18-month contract at Oakwell and struck in first half injury time to secure Barnsley's first league win in nine games.

Simon Davey's troops were fourth in the Championship a little over two months ago but their shocking freefall has seen them slip towards the drop zone.

But the visitors dominated the opening half an hour, Clive Platt sent a Mark Yeates cross narrowly wide before Paul Ifil forced a reflex save from Heinz Muller.

But Barnsley took the lead in injury time when Macken capitalised on hesitant Colchester defending to easily find the corner from eight yards.
