Barry and Heskey eager for encore

Few would have predicted that the backbone of England's resurgence against Israel and Russia would originate from Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic.

But Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey emerged from starring roles in England's Euro 2008 double-header hopeful that they have done enough to keep their places against Estonia next month.

Barry, whose performances alongside Steven Gerrard have re-opened the debate about the centre of England's midfield, said: "It only takes a few passes and a few things to go well and you're OK. Football is a confidence sport.

"The first game went well and I brought that into the second one against Russia. A few years ago I'd have found this hard to believe as it's difficult to look ahead, but you've got to keep going.

"I knew I was still young enough and had confidence in myself so I'm happy with the way it went.

"Frank Lampard and Gerrard have had a settled partnership for a long time and Owen Hargreaves has come in and done well, so I'm not getting ahead of my station.

"But at the same time, I've given the manager another option. I've been in and out for seven years so I just want to get into squads and hopefully pick up games."

If Barry's excellence over the last few days has been impressive, Heskey's has been staggering.

The former Leicester, Liverpool and Birmingham centre forward appeared to have played his last international when he joined Wigan at the start of last season but now has designs on a place in the Euro 2008 Finals.

Heskey said: "I never thought my chance had gone. I can't really think like that, I always believed in my ability, so you've just got to wait for the manager when he needs you.

"It was nice to get back out there on the field for England and see the stadium and the crowd and everything. I always knew I could fit back into the side regardless."
