Barry blitz has Bolton staring at trapdoor

Sunshine one minute, an icy blast of winter the next. In 90 minutes on Saturday, the weather at Villa Park mirrored a year in the life of Bolton Wanderers. It is a year that is almost certain to end in a ticket to the Championship.

Whether that ticket will be a one-way pass will depend on the restoration of harmony in a camp that appears close to breaking point.

Captain marvel: Gareth Barry led by example with a double

There was just too much finger pointing, too many gestures of despair, too much bickering among teammates during this crushing defeat.

The sentiments expressed by manager Gary Megson and his players were worthy enough, but like their performance on the pitch, they carried a hollow ring. It will take two wins to pull ahead of 17th-placed Birmingham, but it is hard to see Bolton picking up two more points this season.

Former Villa defender Gary Cahill said: "Obviously that wasn't the result I was hoping for on my return. Far from it. The games are ticking away for us and these are difficult times at Bolton. Nobody is going to lie. But we've got to roll our sleeves up and dig in."

Gareth Barry was the star of the show, scoring twice and laying on goals for Gabriel Agbonlahor andMarlon Harewood, but Ashley Young also tormented Bolton in a roving role.

When asked whether Young could be England's Cristiano Ronaldo, Villa boss Martin O'Neill sensibly avoided hyperbole, saying: "It's fair to say that Ashley has the same enthusiasm to take people on as Ronaldo. I don't want to tie him down and he's capable of beating all defenders, but I wouldn't want to draw enormous superlatives just because we won today."
