Barton, 25, is expected to be named on the bench, but may well come on for his first taste of football since manager Kevin Keegan was appointed following the sacking of Sam Allardyce at St James' Park.

Barton: relaxation of bail conditions allows him to play

Under his original bail conditions, Barton agreed to live at the Sporting Chance clinic in Hampshire and to abide by a night-time curfew. This ruled out the possibility of his playing for Newcastle, though he has trained with the team.

Barton, of Widnes, Cheshire, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray after an incident in Liverpool's Church Street at 5.30am on 27 December.

Barton was charged with his brother, Andrew, 19, also of Widnes, who is accused of assault causing actual bodily harm and affray.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on March 12.
