Bayliss bounces back from surgery

World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss has set his sights on returning to action in less than two weeks after having part of a finger amputated after crashing out at Donington Park on Sunday.

The Australian had surgery in Derby after falling in the European round of the championship at the Leicestershire circuit.

Bayliss crashed while leading at Donington

The Ducati Xerox rider was leading the first race at Donington when he crashed and damaged the little finger on his right hand.

Bayliss, who celebrated his 38th birthday on Friday and then took pole position on Saturday at Donington, has returned home to Monte Carlo to recover following the operation.

The crash at Coppice on lap six left Bayliss needing surgery to remove the top two bones on his finger, an operation which was carried out at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.

Bayliss now faces medical checks on Friday and the following Thursday before he can be given the all-clear to race at Valencia in Spain a week on Sunday in the fourth round of the world championship.

Bayliss said: "The crash happened so quickly that I don't remember my hand going under the handlebar or anything.

"I'm confident I'm going to be fine for Valencia. I feel like things are coming along okay and I've still got plenty of days to recover.

"I feel like I can get on a motorbike now but I won't know that until I do. Hopefully in just a week and a half you'll see the usual Troy."

Bayliss' crash dropped him to sixth in the championship points standings which are topped by Britain's James Toseland on the HANNspree Ten Kate Honda.
