Leeds United came looking for revenge for one of the most embarrassing nights in their history and departed with the strange sound of a standing ovation from all four stands of the ground for their match-winner, Jermaine Beckford.
They may be unused to popularity with opposing fans but the first hat-trick of Beckford’s career – a volley, a thunderbolt and a chip – earned him applause from the Chester supporters.
In the process he helped Leeds maintain their proud record of never being knocked out in the first round of the Carling Cup and he ensured there was no repeat of an ignominious defeat.
Treble chance: Jermaine Beckford completes his hat-trick
In the season Leeds reached the European Cup final, Chester earned their most famous result ever against Jimmy Armfield’s team.
The Division Four team beat the league champions in 1974. Now only one league separates them but as early as the third minute it was obvious that the gulf between the two teams is vast.
And it made for an unhappy reunion with his old club for the former Leeds captain Paul Butler. The veteran defender, who was marking Beckford, was hauled off at half-time after being outclassed and outpaced.
For Leeds’ opener, goalkeeper Casper Ankergren’s kick travelled 70 yards and Beckford sped away from Butler to volley it in.
He escaped the Elland Road old boy again before unleashing an unstoppable long-range shot to double his tally before making sure of the match ball with the pick of his trio, a 35-yard chip that was as accurate as it was audacious.
Leeds boss Gary McAllister said: ‘It was a wonderful hat-trick and he should be very proud of it. We still have to remind ourselves that he was playing non-league football three years ago. The chip was exquisite. He showed a lot of ability and a lot of bravery. You can make yourself look foolish if it doesn’t come off.’
