Face of United: Beckham could succeed Sir Bobby Charlton

United see their ambassadors as an important part of their worldwide marketing initiatives and also want Ryan Giggs to perform such a role when his playing career ends.

Beckham has no desire to be a manager and his enduring passion for United, even after leaving the club for Real Madrid amid acrimonious circumstances in 2003, has been noted.

As the world's most famous footballer, United recognise his value and even Sir Alex Ferguson would not be expected to oppose any such appointment.

The United manager's relationship with Beckham might have disintegrated before the player's move to Real Madrid but Ferguson has also acknowledged how respectful Beckham has remained.

Any animosity that might have existed between the men is said to have all but disappeared, leaving nobody in opposition to an approach when Beckham nears the end of his stay with Los Angeles Galaxy.

The only potential stumbling block, say United insiders, could be Beckham's salary for performing a role.
