Beckham winning fitness battle

David Beckham is winning his race to be fit for Real Madrid's Spanish League title decider against Real Mallorca tomorrow.

He aggravated a sprained ankle in last week's draw with Zaragoza but he trained yesterday and is expected to line up on the right side of midfield in his final game for Madrid, which kicks off at 8pm.

But while the doubts over Beckham's chances of starting disappeared, Real Madrid were given a headache by midfielder Mohammad Diarra, who was flying back from Mali last night after Real won a club v country row.

FIFA confirmed yesterday that both Diarra and Sevilla striker Fredi Kanoute had been cleared to play the final games of the Spanish season before turning out for Mali against Sierra Leone.

Kanoute returned yesterday but Mali captain Diarra was not on the same flight and is due to arrive this morning, just 36 hours before Real's crucial final match.

Roberto Carlos is also playing his last game for the club and Ruud van Nistelrooy needs just one more goal to share the Golden Boot with Roma's Francesco Totti.

Madrid are level with Barcelona at the top of La Liga with 73 points.

Sevilla have 71 points. Victory will give Madrid a record 30th league title even if Barcelona beat Gimnastic Tarragona, as Madrid have the edge in their head-toheads this season (3-3 and 2-0).
