Being in the UEFA Cup hurts Rangers boss Smith

Rangers manager Walter Smith says playing in the UEFA Cup will be no consolation after the Scottish club were knocked out of the Champions League.

Smith's side were beaten 3-0 at home by Lyon which meant they finished third in Group E and missed out on a place in the knock-out phase.

They will be in the UEFA Cup draw next week instead, but Smith said: "We are disappointed we are in it after getting the opportunity to stay in the Champions League.

Devastated: Rangers captain Barry Ferguson

"We wanted to be in the last 16 so it's no real consolation that we have the UEFA Cup to play for."
