Benayoun warns Liverpool must not get complacent in the race for the final Champions League spot

Yossi Benayoun says Liverpool have to be at the top of their game if they are to claim the final Champions League qualifying spot for next season.

Liverpool's win over Blackburn at the weekend put them five points clear of Merseyside rivals Everton with four games remaining in the race for fourth place but the former West Ham United midfielder insists nothing can be taken for granted

"We have a good advantage because we have more points and a better goal difference," said the Israel international.

"But there are still 12 points to be played for so we have to make sure we do not lose concentration because if we do Everton could close the gap."

With just one defeat and seven wins in their last nine league games, Liverpool have pulled clear of their Stanley Park neighbours as they vie for the automatic Champions League spot with David Moyes' side.

Benayoun believes the combination of the race with Everton and the desire to ensure they are in the Champions League for a fifth successive season has brought out the best in Liverpool.

He said: "It is obviously important for the club to finish as high up the league as possible.

"We want to play in the Champions League because it is a competition we enjoy and to do that you have to make sure you finish in the top four.

"In the last few weeks we have played really well in the league and, apart from the game against Man United, we have had some good results.

"But now we have to keep our good form going because there are no easy games in the Premier League."

Meanwhile, the entire Liverpool squad were today attending the annual Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield on the 19th anniversary of the tragedy in which 96 Reds fans lost their lives.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez says the thoughts of everyone at the club are with the families of those who died in the disaster which happened on April 15, 1989.

He said: "This is obviously an important day of the year for everybody connected with our club.

"We must take time to remember those who lost their lives at Hillsborough and to be with their families and friends today.

"We must give them our support and show that we are thinking of them.

"It's important we pay our respects and that is why we will all be at the memorial service."
