Liverpool are demanding £15million for the 26-year-old Spanish midfielder but Juve say the fee is too high.

Reports in The Sun suggest the Italians are in talks with Seville’s £8m-rated Dane Christian Poulsen. If the deal collapses it would throw a massive spanner in the works at Anfield.

However, Liverpool insist their plans to sign Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry are not dependent on offloading players.

That cash is already in place after selling Peter Crouch to Portsmouth but Benitez's hopes of uniting Spain strikeforce Villa and Fernando Torres could be shattered if the Alonso deals falls through.

The Spanish club want anything from £17m-£30m for Villa whose four goals won him the golden boot at Euro 2008 despite missing two of Spain's six games.
