Bent looks to pile on the misery for his friend and De-foe

Darren Bent has vowed to keep close friend Jermain Defoe out of the Tottenham attack.

But the £17m striker insists their rivalry for both and country won't affect that friendship.

Looking on: But will Jermain Defoe (right) be happy in a four-man Spurs forward squad?

The two have been mates since England Youth and under-21 days with Defoe winning 24 full caps and Bent two.

Bent, 23, must now dislodge Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov but will also be keen to keep 24-year-old Defoe in the shade as well.

Bent said: "We don't talk about the situation, only about the team.

"I am very close to Jermain and we remain good mates. But the best thing I can do is worry about myself.

"We all have jobs to do and if I'm firing, Jermain is firing - and so too are Keane and Berbo - then we will be in a fantastic position.

"A perfect season for me would be playing and scoring - and finishing in the top four. England is a bonus."
