Berbatov and Keane double the trouble

That is a world-class partnership, a step back in time to the days before the Premier League's obsession with lone striker systems and a bygone era when managers searched for the perfect attacking blend.
Keane: Berbatov salute
With 36 goals between them this season, Berbatov and Keane will be paired again at Wembley in the Carling Cup Final tomorrow afternoon.
The artistry of Berbatov complements the darting presence of Keane — style and subtlety mixed with brawn and bravery. Chelsea beware.
'They are the best partnership in the Premier League,' claimed Jermaine Jenas yesterday.
'As soon as they step on to the pitch there is some chemistry.
'I've seen them pass without even looking and you need that with your front two. They are two top players, they are both at a great age and they are at a great stage of their careers. It is just fantastic for Tottenham.'
It is also fantastic for Keane, who is thriving on the high-quality service provided by his Bulgarian strike partner.
Keane said: 'Berba has the style of Eric Cantona with the way he plays, but to be mentioned in the same breath as Cantona — phew — is really something. Cantona was the best around.
'Tall players are usually target men, but he has everything in his game. He can go short or long, he holds it well, he can see a pass and his assists are unbelievable.
'His all-round game is different class. We read each other well and he is the best partner I have come across.'
They were the first-choice front pairing under Martin Jol, but have come on under Juande Ramos.
Berbatov, with 16 goals, has the clever touches around the box, but Keane is only two off last season's 22-goal haul.
To keep them together, Tottenham will offer Berbatov another new contract in the summer and it may just be enough to keep him out of the clutches of Manchester United.
The gentleman's agreement between Berbatov and Tottenham that would allow him to leave in the summer is still in place, but Ramos will have some persuasive arguments that the club are heading in the right direction.
If Spurs can win their first trophy in nine years tomorrow, it could be a clincher.
