Berbatov follows in Ginola's footsteps onto award shortlist

Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov has been named on the preliminary 50-man shortlist for one of the most the prestigious awards in European football.

The Spurs striker is the first Tottenham to be a candidate for the Ballon d'Or, awarded by France Football magazine, since David Ginola in 1999.

Back of the net: Dimitar Berbatov heads Tottenham's first goal against Aston Villa

Berbatov, who hopes to shake off an injury sustained on international duty with Bulgaria last week to play for Spurs at Newcastle tonight, scored 23 times in his debut season at White Hart Lane.

His achievements earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Season.
