Berbatov to leave the Lane after agent reveals Tottenham contract talks have twice collapsed

Dimitar Berbatov looks certain to leave Tottenham in the summer after his agent claimed talks over a new contract have collapsed.

The Bulgarian international striker still has two years left on his current deal with an option for another two years, but his agent, Emil Dantchev, says negotiations have stalled over an extension.

Dantchev says he is meeting Spurs again this week, but a new agreement is unlikely as he is looking to move Berbatov to a club who are playing in the Champions League next season.

He said: "His future will be decided in the next couple of months. We have twice given up talks about Berbatov's new contract and this is due to the fact that Tottenham are unwilling to fix Berbatov's transfer price.

"He is 27-years old and he needs to win trophies. It is time he was transferred to a club that regularly plays in the Champions League. There are seven to eight clubs in Europe interested and we know them well."

It will come as a massive blow to Spurs manager Juande Ramos, who was confident he had convinced the striker to stay after the club won the Carling Cup.

But Tottenham's inconsistent league form and second-round exit from the UEFA Cup has made him have a change of heart. Berbatov admitted on Bulgarian television that he is desperate to play in the Champions League and is worried he is running out of time.

However, Spurs denied there has been any problem with contract talks. A spokesman said: "Dimitar still has two years on his contract with an option for another two years and is on one of the best packages at the club."

Berbatov has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months including Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan. Manchester City are keen and can offer the company of fellow Bulgarians Martin Petrov and Valeri Bojinov - but not Champions League football.
