Berges celebrates his stage win in the Tour of Britain
Frenchman Emilien Berges cruised to victory in the third stage of cycling’s Tour of Britain and in the process snatched the yellow jersey from Alessandro Petacchi.
Ian Stannard was the leading Briton in sixth, while it was another good day for Roger Hammond, who took the lead in the points competition after finishing the stage from Chard to Burnham-on-Sea in 12th place.
Fellow Briton Kristian House kept the polka-dot jersey.
A delighted Berges said: 'It was a really good day. Time trialling is my speciality so once I was out in front I knew I had a good chance.
'Once I saw that there were no motorbikes behind me I knew I'd done it and I just enjoyed the ride home.
'But the hard work starts now - it's hard getting up there but it is even harder to stay out at the front.'
Meanwhile, Mark Cavendish continued his highly successful season by claiming the first stage of the Tour of Missouri.
Cavendish, who gloriously claimed four stage victories at the Tour de France in the summer, won in 3 hr 15min 14 sec.
(Tour of Britain, Today: Stage 4, Worcester to Stoke on Trent, 98 miles)
