Berry vows to rebuild career after CPS drops race-fixing charges

Alan Berry insists he will rebuild his career after damaging race-fixing charges against him were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Berry's fortunes slumped and he seemed on the verge of selling the Lancashire stables his father Jack built into one of the most prolific yards in the country after being accused, along with blacksmith Steve O'Sullivan, of knowingly running Hillside Girl when she was lame at Carlisle in June 2003 and backing her to lose.

Berry said: 'It's over but it has been a long time coming. I'm going to get my head down and I'd like to train 100 winners in a season. My ambition is still there.'

The case was linked to the Kieren Fallon trial which collapsed last month.

It completes a sorry episode for the CPS, the police and the racing authorities, whose reviews of the whole episode, which has cost taxpayers £13million, will make interesting reading.
