Bidding war looms over Ouija’s colt

Scans have confirmed that Lord Derby's mare, who retired in December after winning seven Group One races, is carrying a colt by Kingmambo. Her first foal could spark a bidding war between rivals Coolmore and the Maktoums in 2009.

Shrewd move: Lord Derby
As a commercial breeder, Lord Derby was always likely to sell any male offspring and he was shrewd to send Ouija Board to Kentucky-based Kingmambo.
The stallion is neither owned or part-owned by the Maktoums or Coolmore, so his stock are fair game for both parties in the sales ring where, on the whole, each organisation currently boycotts each others' produce.
Kingmambo's stock are enjoying a good year on the racecourse, with Epsom Oaks winner Light Shift, trained by Henry Cecil, leading the way.
Lord Derby said: "Ouija Board is in colt to Kingmambo and is currently in isolation in Kentucky. She is due to return to the Britain on July 15. We believe she is carrying a colt foal and in the past we have predominantly sold the colts and kept the fillies."
Bloodstock agent David Metcalfe said: "If everything is in the right place confirmation wise, a colt such as this could make as much as £10million in the sales ring.
"Kingmambo is a top sire and Ouija Board, apart from her exploits on the track, comes from an excellent family."
The current world record price for a horse sold at public auction is the $16m (about £8m) that Coolmore paid for The Green Monkey in Florida last spring.
He is set to make his much postponed debut in the US shortly.
