Binman Rendall Munroe retains European super-bantamweight title

Leicester binman Rendall Munroe completed a successful first defence of his European super-bantamweight title against Frenchman Salem Bouaita in Nottingham.

The 27-year-old, who won the belt with a stunning upset victory over top Spaniard Kiko Martinez in March, was clearly superior to the highly unorthodox Bouaita at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre.

And as the fight slipped further from Bouaita's grasp, the challenger's corner pulled him out after the seventh round to hand Munroe a winning start to his reign.

The highlight of a busy first round saw Munroe land a decent left hand but take one in return. Bouaita sought success by winging wide, overhand punches with both hands which produced varying success.

Munroe became visibly frustrated as the scrappy nature of the fight limited his ability to take control but the east midlander reacted by forcing the French challenger onto the back foot with sustained, steady pressure in the fifth.

A lunging left clearly hurt the former French champion in the sixth but an earlier clash of heads left Munroe with a minor cut.

While Bouaita was struggling, it came as a surprise when his corner pulled him out after the seventh round to hand Munroe his reward for a creditable performance.

Londoner Ian Napa earlier retained his British bantamweight belt with a comprehensive unanimous points win over game Belfast challenger Colin Moffett.

Moffett, 33, ploughed forward but found himself constantly out-boxed by light-punching Napa and was floored by a clash of heads in the 12th, unfortunate to be given a count by referee Mickey Vann.

Napa's victory ensured he won the Lonsdale belt for keeps.

Munroe told Sky Sports 1: "It was tough, I think he just came for the pay-day really, he was holding all the time. But I kept pushing forward.

"I think after I hit him with a fair few punches in the first round he thought 'forget this, I don't want any more of this'. He came to try to survive but I was too strong for him."

Promoter Frank Maloney was unhappy with Bouaita's spoiling tactics, describing his position as European mandatory challenger "a disgrace".
