Birmingham expect quick Forssell return

Birmingham striker Mikael Forssell has undergone a successful operation to cure a hernia problem - and he could be back playing within three weeks.

The Finland international went under the knife earlier this week after clearly suffering from the setback during the Carling Cup tie at Blackburn.

With the two-week international break, Blues are optimistic the former Chelsea player will be back in action sooner rather than later without missing too many games.

City assistant manager Eric Black said: "Mikael had the operation on Tuesday and everything went well. He's gone back to Finland for a few days now to rest and recover.

"He has a slight tear which had opened up a little bit but, with modern surgical techniques, it can be as little as three weeks before somebody is playing again.

"We hope to have him back training in the next seven to 10 days and hopefully he won't miss too many games with the international break going on for two weeks."

Forssell has been dogged by injury problems for the past three years, most notably to his knee, but he had looked sharp in pre-season and scored on the opening day of the campaign at Chelsea.

With Rowan Vine out on loan at QPR, Blues will hope Forssell is back in contention sooner rather than later to provide competition for Cameron Jerome, Olivier Kapo and Garry O'Connor.
