Birmingham move for Tottenham's Ghaly

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce has confirmed making an approach for Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly.

Ghaly, 25, has been tipped for a move from White Hart Lane since reacting angrily to being substituted against Blackburn in the penultimate Premier League game of the season.

"He's one we have enquired about," Bruce said.

Bruce has been monitoring the Egypt international for a season, before the midfielder made his competitive debut for Spurs.

Ghaly made a breakthrough into Martin Jol's starting XI last season but was never a regular starter, and his future appeared in doubt when he threw his shirt to the floor against Blackburn and left the stadium immediately.

"He came to my attention a year ago when we had Tottenham in a pre-season friendly in the rain at St Andrews," said Bruce in the Birmingham Post. "It was that game when (Dimitar) Berbatov played and scored a stunning goal.

"But my eye was caught by Ghaly and we've had him monitored since. As I said, we've made an enquiry but it hasn't gone further - yet."

Meanwhile, Teemu Tainio has tipped new signing Younes Kaboul to feature in midfield as well as his usual central-defence role.

Tainio, who played with Kaboul at Auxerre earlier in his career, said: "He's powerful, strong and quick but he's a footballer as well and he can play in defensive midfield, I remember he did that earlier in his career."
