Bladerunner Oscar Pistorius wins right to run at this summer's Beijing Olympics

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has overturned a ban on double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius competing against able-bodied athletes - allowing him to immediately run in all International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) sanctioned events.

Pistorius could now run at this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing if he makes the qualifying time.

"I am thrilled with the panel's findings and hope that it silences many of the crazy theories that have been circulating in recent months about my having an unfair advantage," said Pistorius this afternoon.

"My focus throughout this appeal has been to ensure that disabled athletes be given the chance to compete and compete fairly with able-bodied athletes. I look forward to continuing my quest to qualify for the Olympics."

The arbitration panel's unanimous ruling - that the decision of the IAAF be "revoked with immediate effect and Mr Pistorius is currently eligible to compete in IAAF-sanctioned events" - means he can can now continue his goal of qualifying for the Beijing Games.

Pistorius now needs to clock the Olympic 'A' standard of 45.55 seconds or the 'B' qualifier of 45.95sec if no other South African should attain the higher one.

Already organisers of the Rome Golden League meeting on July 11 have stated Pistorius will be welcome to race there as he did last summer.

So too have Fast Track, who stage British meetings on behalf of UK Athletics and gave Pistorius an outing in Sheffield last season.

The IAAF, accepting the CAS decision, said on their website they were pleased to announce Pistorius is eligible to compete in competitions under IAAF rules.

"The IAAF accepts the decision of CAS and Oscar will be welcomed wherever he competes this summer," said president Lamine Diack.

"He is an inspirational man and we look forward to admiring his achievements in the future."

A statement added: "The decision is a culmination of a process in which Mr Pistorius and the IAAF have co-operated together to resolve the issue of whether the Cheetah prostheses Mr Pistorius wears give him an advantage in competition.

"While the IAAF has been keen to give Mr Pistorius every opportunity to participate in its events, it had to deal with some concerns that he may be gaining an unfair advantage.

"As a result, in November 2007, Mr Pistorius and the IAAF voluntarily engaged in a process of testing under the auspices of Professor Bruggemann at the Sportshochschule in Cologne.

"Professor Bruggemann provided his report in December 2007. Following this report, the IAAF Council took the decision that, because Professor Bruggemann had found that the prostheses gave Mr Pistorius an advantage, he was not eligible to compete.

"Mr Pistorius referred the matter to CAS where further expert advice was obtained and reviewed.

"The hearing before CAS was conducted in an open, constructive and co-operative fashion with all parties keen to establish the truth.

"The CAS Panel has today delivered its decision. It has decided that, at the moment, not enough is known scientifically to be able to prove that Mr Pistorius obtains an advantage from the use of the prostheses.

"Consequently, it has cleared him to run."
