Boks coach White sparks rush to sign him

Jake White is free to become the next head coach of England or Wales after the Springboks confirmed on Monday that the architect of their World Cup triumph will not be offered a new contract.
South Africa's rugby union invited applications for White's job even before the team led by John Smit had beaten England 15-6 in the final at the Stade de France 10 days ago.

Going out on a high: White, pictured with Percy Montgomery, has not reapplied for his job
When the incumbent admitted he hadn't reapplied, it was assumed he would be replaced, but supportive comments from the likes of President Thabo Mbeki hinted at a possible rethink.
However, a statement on sarugby.net on Monday night crushed any speculation that White would stay in his post. It read: 'The panel to appoint the national coach met today in Johannesburg to further discuss the process and to finalise the shortlist for the position of Springbok coach.
'It was confirmed that Jake White did not apply for the position and he was therefore not considered. SA Rugby recently met with White to discuss the matter and can confirm that White advised SA Rugby that he does not want to make a decision on his coaching future at this point in time.
'The panel has therefore compiled a shortlist of four candidates and their names will not be released until they have been informed.'
White took charge of the ailing Springboks in 2004 and orchestrated an astonishing revival in their fortunes. They won the Tri-Nations tournament during his first year in charge and he was named international coach of the year.
After some poor results as the coach tried out new players and developed his squad, South Africa went through the World Cup unbeaten to secure the Webb Ellis trophy.
With such an impressive achievement on his CV, White will be in demand. He has already been contacted by the Welsh Rugby Union and with speculation mounting about Brian Ashton's future as England head coach, the RFU may also come calling.
White has already revealed that he would be interested in the possibility of coaching England but Australia are also on the look-out for someone to replace John Connolly, so he could cherry-pick from a range of job options.
