Bolder's double fails to rock Blades

Adam Bolder showed perfect timing with his first goals for Wednesday but United staged a dramatic late fightback from 2-0 down to rescue a point.

Just a day after his loan from QPR was extended to the end of the season, former Derby midfielder Bolder celebrated in style.

But in-form United set up a pulsating finish when Wednesday skipper Richard Wood scored an own goal five minutes after Bolder's second once James Beattie's shot had been saved by Lee Grant.

And Beattie was the hero for United after 83 minutes when his 20-yard free-kick levelled matters.

United were driven by a desire to prevent Wednesday recording their first derby double since the outbreak of World War One. Wednesday had won 2-0 in the sides' meeting in January.

But Wednesday's outstanding central defensive partnership of Mark Beevers and Wood stood firm early on as Beattie looked to exploit his current form.

Gary Speed's fierce drive was parried against a post by Lee Grant after 23 minutes, but Beattie had strayed offside.

Stephen Quinn went closer two minutes later with a curling effort that Grant did well to paw from under his bar, but Jermaine Johnson's shot at the other end sped unerringly to Paddy Kenny.

Graham Kavanagh marked his first Steel City derby with the game's first yellow card for tugging back goalbound Beattie as United searched for the crucial opening.

Yet it was Wednesday who grabbed the important first goal five minutes before the break after Billy Sharp lost the ball and Franck Songo'o's clever backheel towards goal played in Steve Watson.

He almost tripped over the ball but recovered to lay on a superb cross to the back post where the unmarked Bolder headed Wednesday in front despite Kenny getting a hand to it.

It would have been even worse for United but Kenny saved magnificently from Songo'o soon after. Beattie headed just over from a corner just after the restart.

But the Wednesday enclave in the season's best 31,760 crowd were in ecstacy as Songo'o unleashed a 55th-minute shot that Kenny couldn't hold and Bolder followed up for his second goal. But those fans were showing very different emotions by the end.
