Bolger bounces back with Beo
06 May 2007
At last there was some respite for hard-pressed punters as Finsceal Beo, backed from 6-4 to 5-4 for yesterday's Stan James 1,000 Guineas, delivered the stunning victory a hot favourite should.
The Jim Bolger-trained filly, whose name means living legend' in Gaelic, was always prominent under Kevin Manning on the stands side before taking up the running at the twofurlong marker and pulling two-and-a-half lengths clear of fellow Irish raider Arch Swing with Simply Perfect one-and-a-quarter lengths away third and Treat fourth.

Flying filly: Finsceal Beo under Kevin Manning
Finsceal Beo's time of 1m 34.94sec is the fastest Guineas of all time (including the 2,000 Guineas). It beats the previous best for fillies (Lahan in 2000) by a second and a half and Mister Baileys' 1994 colts' record by 0.14 seconds.
However, there was a significant tailwind. Unlike Bolger's top-rated colt Teofilo, who had to be withdrawn from the 2,000 Guineas suffering from soreness in his right knee four days ago, Finsceal Beo had a perfect preparation — and she could get better because her summer coat has yet to blossom.
Bolger revealed that Teofilo is almost certain to miss the English and Irish Derbys. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July is his earliest possible target, but he is more likely to be aimed at the Irish Champion Stakes in September.
Bolger said: "Whatever time he is going to need (to get right) he is going to get it and we are going the safe route with him.
"It would appear that Epsom is out. I'd say we're looking at six weeks on the easy list. We will assess him at that stage. The very earliest possibility would be the King George and more probably the Irish Champion Stakes."
Teofilo's late withdrawal had hit ante-post punters hard, following the earlier defection of main rival Holy Roman Emperor to stud, but Bolger said: "Nobody died and if there are any real hardship cases out there, people who lost money (backing Teofilo), if they put a good case to me I'd consider it. Names, telephone numbers and exactly what their circumstances are.
"If there is a really hard luck story out there I'd have a rustle around and see what we can do."
Bolger was glad that a traumatic week ended in triumph for a filly he holds in the highest regard. She will now go for the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Pretty Polly Stakes over 10 furlongs at The Curragh on June 30. The Epsom Oaks was never on her agenda.
Bolger added: "I was not surprised at how easily she won as she is a brilliant filly. We've had a smooth run with her and she got herself fit. Her action doesn't appear as fluent as her talent would indicate but she's an awesome filly."
The one disappointing aspect surrounding the race was the absence of second favourite Sander Camillo, who was found to be in season yesterday morning. However, she could yet clash with Finsceal Beo in the Coronation Stakes next month.
The trophy for the 1,000 Guineas was presented to owner Michael Ryan by Lester Piggott. The former then orchestrated his friends into a rendition of Dungarvan My Home Town' to raucous Irish cheers.
Bolger reflected on Saturday's 2,000 Guineas saying: "It was a wonderful race with a very good winner. I am delighted for Geoff Huffer. Would we have won the race with Teofilo? I'm not going there."
Simply Perfect (8-1 from 12-1) and Treat (12-1 from 25-1) were supported with Coral for the Oaks after their prominent runs. Passage of Time remains the favourite at 7-2.
St Leger winner Sixties Icon returned to form when landing the Jockey Club Stakes by an authoritative three lengths under Frankie Dettori from Admiral's Cruise, despite trainer Jeremy Noseda's fears about the fast ground.
He said: "Maybe he has picked up more speed as he has got older. That was a good performance — very smooth."
"I desperately needed to get a run into him before the Coronation Cup. Please God he is alright in the morning.
"It looked like he showed plenty of pace there and he's done the job well."
