Booze refused for caller to Ian Wright's radio show

Ian Wright doesn't know much about the problems in Tibet so he invited listeners' contributions for a torch-relay discussion on his Talksport radio show.

First-time caller Sam phoned to say he was studying Chinese history as part of his GCSE course and argued the orgins of the conflict lay with Mao Zedong's invasion of 1950.

Wireless crossed: A caller to Ian Wright's radio show was given a goodie bag instead of alcohol

Wright's co-presenter Adrian Durham thanked him and said: "For being our first caller, we'll send you a box of Strongbow [courtesy of the show's cider-brewing sponsors]."

The move led to switchboard callers questioning the moral and legal grounds for supplying booze to a GSCE student, typically aged 15 or 16.

Talksport later claimed that Sam would be sent a goodie bag instead.
