Boro facing extra £2m Alves bill

Middlesbrough may have to pay a further £2million for Afonso Alves because of his contract wrangle with AZ Alkmaar.

The Brazilian striker agreed to join AZ last month, but changed his mind despite signing a contract with the Dutch side.

The legality of the document was questioned by the player's lawyer, leading to his £11m move to the Riverside Stadium.

But AZ are furious and FIFA will hear an appeal on their behalf, with the possibility of compensation having to be paid.

AZ chairman and owner Dirk Scheringa said: "We informed Middlesbrough that Alves had signed for us and the arbitrage decision had confirmed that and it was legally binding, but they didn't contact us.

"This is now with FIFA and we're confident they will come to the same conclusion."

AZ manager Louis van Gaal said: "It's totally unacceptable that Alves has signed a contract for Middlesbrough when he had signed one with us.

"It's astonishing that someone can sign a legal contract and then go to another club. I'm disappointed that this can happen."
