Boss Capello offers Ashton an England lifeline despite debut to forget against Trinidad & Tobago

Fabio Capello insists that Dean Ashton had not blown his England chances despite criticism of his international debut.

Although the West Ham striker won his first call-up two years ago, a serious ankle injury followed by a knee problem meant he did not earn his first cap until last week's friendly with Trinidad & Tobago.

Ashton was substituted just after the break having missed a couple of chances.

By contrast, strike partner Jermain Defoe was twice on target in a 3-0 victory.

However, England coach Capello said: "Ashton will be with us for the next few games, depending on if he's fit. I don't understand the criticism against him.

"The English shirt always puts a lot of pressure on you, but he's a good footballer."

Capello also added he would only consider players who were getting regular first-team action.

"It's very important to see them every week," he said. "It means they're very fit and okay for us."
