Brady in frame as Staunton goes

The Republic of Ireland are searching for a new manager today after Steve Staunton's 16-month reign was ended in Dublin last night.

The decision was announced just before midnight at the end of another shambolic day for the FAI, who met Staunton at a hotel in the afternoon as he pleaded for the chance to see out his four-year contract and then delayed the inevitable until after an emergency board meeting, which lasted several hours.

Staunton, who won only six of his 17 games in charge and blew Ireland's faint Euro 2008 qualifying hopes with defeat in Prague last month, stood little chance of keeping his job after he was jeered during last week's embarrassing home draw against Cyprus.

The country's record cap holder, appointed after Brian Kerr was sacked, takes with him international consultant Sir Bobby Robson and his assistant, Aston Villa reserve coach Kevin McDonald.

Arsenal academy director and former Celtic boss Liam Brady unexpectedly put himself forward last night.

"If I was offered it, I would consider taking the job," said Brady, who revealed he was interviewed for the job before Mick McCarthy was appointed more than 10 years ago.

Brady faces competition from fellow former Ireland players David O'Leary and John Aldridge, while the FAI are likely to consider Graeme Souness, Paul Jewell, Kenny Dalglish and Peter Reid, as well as any coaches who may be ousted when Euro 2008 qualifying ends next month - including Terry Venables.

Under 21 coach Don Givens is expected to take charge of the senior team for the final qualifier against Wales in Cardiff next month.
