Bramble is the apple of Pompey Harry's eye

Titus Bramble is ready to join Portsmouth after being released by Newcastle and could be followed by Freddie Ljungberg. Ljungberg, 30, is available on a free transfer and manager Harry Redknapp wants to make him part of his ambitious plans to transform the club over the summer.

Redknapp, who has also lined up Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka and Udinese's Sulley Muntari, is trying to tempt Ljungberg to join former Arsenal team-mates Sol Campbell, Lauren and Kanu with wages of around £50,000-a-week.

Bramble: Released by Newcastle

Bramble, 26, was released this week after five years at Newcastle — who are keen to recruit Campbell, 32, in return. Yet Redknapp will resist all offers for the former England international who has another year left on his contract.

Chief executive Peter Storrie said: "There is money to spend within reason but it is not an open purse and we will be looking at targets carefully. If the right player comes along on a so-called free the wages normally absorb it."
