Breakdown of trust to blame for rash of horrific tackles, says Pearce

Stuart Pearce fears a breakdown of trust between footballers is to blame for the studs-up tackle which has crept into the game. England Under 21 boss Pearce earned a reputation for ferocious tackling during his career and does not want to see it driven from the game as a reaction to the Martin Taylor challenge which broke Eduardo's leg.

Pearce, speaking at an FA Tesco Skills event, said: 'When you're running at someone at pace you have to trust that they will go for the ball and maybe a little bit of trust has gone out of the game.

Pearce: Tough tackler in his Nottingham Forest days

'Tackling properly is an art. The game is so quick nowadays that when you mis-time one it can look horrendously poor. Tackling can be coached. It's not easy but it's like any technique in the game.'

FA chairman Lord Triesman has disclosed that an experimental 'Respect' scheme has been introduced to clean up the game.

He said: 'A trial with 350 clubs is trying to establish proper and decent conduct, particularly towards match officials.'

He is also anxious to discover whether clubs can be made to include a certain number of players eligible to play for England.

He said: 'We need more players eligible for England in the top flight. But current proposals are difficult because they fly in the face of European employment law.'
