Bristol City manager Gary Johnson insists there will be no favouritism over son Lee

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson insists nepotism will not be a factor when he selects his squad to face Hull in the Coca-Cola Championship play-off final.

He could have the unenviable task of informing his son, Lee, he will not be involved in the biggest match in the club's history at Wembley on Saturday.

Gary Johnson: set to choose his squad for Wembley - but will son Lee play?

Johnson junior spent the last two months of the season struggling with an ankle injury but returned as a substitute in the final game of the campaign against Preston and featured again in the play-off semi-final against Crystal Palace.

The midfielder has declared himself fully fit despite not starting a game for seven weeks.

Johnson revealed he already knows what his team will be against the Tigers, but would not say whether his son would be included.

"It is something that has always been brought up, and there is no favouritism as far as Lee is concerned," said City manager.

"We have had a policy and a way of selecting our teams all the way through the season and none of that changes for this game.

"I pick teams for the right reasons and the right occasions and if somebody misses out then that is unlucky. Everybody receives the same treatment."

Johnson added: "I think what we have got is a group of 16 players who deserve to be in that group of 16.

"They are the players that have played the most number of games this season and whether someone is in the team or on the bench - whoever it is - they will be supporting the other players.

"They are all in it together, so it is not difficult when you have a tried and tested system to help you.

"We have been working since the weekend with the 16 - the 11 starters and the five on the bench - so they have all been around it. We have worked on things and we know our team and we know our subs."

Midfielder Johnson insists he is over his ankle injury and hopes he has done enough since his return to warrant a place in the squad.

The 26-year-old admits he would be heartbroken but would respect his father's decision should he be overlooked at Wembley.

He said: "I am definitely fully fit now. It was a bad injury that took longer to heal than we thought.

"I maybe came back a bit too early on it and that set me back a little but I am okay now and I am match fit too, which is important because a lay-off like that can take time to get your lungs working again.

"I am fit and raring to go and looking forward to hopefully being involved. I might have to get my mum to bully him into starting me on Saturday.

"In all seriousness though, the lads have done really well and all I can do as a player is put myself up for selection and hope that I am picked.

"If I am on the bench then I will give my dad and the players that start the game 100 per cent of my support, and if I am left out altogether then I will still be there for everyone.

"It would obviously be a massive disappointment to be left out but I feel I have worked hard to get my fitness back and I am hopeful of being involved."
