At the World Championships in Tokyo on Saturday, the women earned their place but the men finished 10th today, two spots outside qualifying.

However, the teams who finished ninth to 16th have a second chance at a 2012 test event at London's O2 Arena in January, when the top four will go through to the Games. If Britain fail there, as hosts, they will still have two gymnasts in the men's event next summer.

Olympic bronze medallist Louis Smith, who performed impressively on the pommel horse, said: "We don't really fancy cancelling Christmas to work through the holidays and compete in the test event but if that's what we have to do, then we have to do it."
