Bruce emerges as target for Bolton

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has emerged as a target for Bolton to replace Sammy Lee.

The Trotters are understood to have approached the Blues to ask permission to hold talks with Bruce.

But it is understood the City board has refused permission.

Bruce has been at St Andrews for six years and twice steered the Midlands club to promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

But he has become unsettled after prospective new owner Carson Yeung refused to rubber stamp the new contract he agreed with the current board of directors.

Bruce has 20 months to run of his current deal and in the past has stated his desire to remain with Birmingham long-term.

But he could be tempted by a move to the Reebok Stadium as a successor to one of his closest friends in football, Sam Allardyce, who has moved on to Newcastle.

Bolton decided to axe Lee after an indifferent start to the season and Bruce has the managerial experience that he was lacking at top level.

He first steered Birmingham into the top flight in 2002 and kept them there for four years and, after they were relegated in May 2006, he brought them back at the first attempt.

Bruce is hoping to hold talks in the near future with Yeung to try and establish whether he has a future with the club when the Hong Kong businessman takes full control - probably within the next two months.
