The Wigan boss ended a 10-week chase for Egypt striker Amr Zaki, 25, yesterday after terms were agreed with his club, El Zamalek.

'According to FIFA statistics, Zaki is rated No 1 in the world,' said Bruce.

'He's scored better than one in two for his country and Egypt won the Africa Cup of Nations. He's a big star out there - I hope he can be for us.'

He has scored 27 goals in 48 appearances for Egypt and his club were reluctant to let him go, with Zaki claiming he had even been threatened by bodyguards of the club president.

But they have now accepted the £1m loan fee for next season, plus a guaranteed sale price of £5m if Zaki impresses.

Bruce has also signed Olivier Kapo from Birmingham.
